Viamonte - Maya Lawrence - A Rose From My GardenDescription
Maya was born in Toronto, Canada. She moved to California at age 10 and has spent her adult life in the East Bay. Maya and her husband were one of the first residents at Viamonte 3 years ago. They are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this month. Maya started taking the AWE classes as soon as they were offered via Zoom during the pandemic. This is her first art class.
“I was very excited about starting class as I always wanted to try but never had the time. Art always seemed a harder threshold to try.” Maya didn’t see herself as an artist, but slowly sees herself that way sharing “I feel more confident about the things I do.”
She mostly paints in watercolor and has tried watercolor pencils and acrylics. Maya is now working on flowers, but wants to get better at animals and landscapes. She considers herself a crafter, working with paper to make cards, and is better at colors with her cards after this class. “I am learning more about color. It’s a journey you go through, starting with how to mix paints and where colors go.”
“We talk about our work and what we’re having trouble with. I get to another level of communication with people.” While they do work on their own, she feels it’s different to be together in the class. “Time goes faster in the group. It’s a social interaction, too. We’re all very happy. It feels good when you’re in the class.” ” Creating art makes Maya feel that “I accomplished something, I did something. Her words of wisdom, “Try something new.”
