REUT - Gay Lee Rubin - By the Side of the Road

Description

I am new to painting but not to the arts. I earned an MFA in creative writing at the University of Michigan and have been writing short stories since I was in my 20’s. I started to create art when I came to Reutlinger. I made rubbings for several years, cutting out their silhouettes of flowers and butterflies, gluing and then painting them with watercolor. They became a narrative painting whose story unfolded during the creation process. For me, meaning and narrative may be arrived at through color and the position of shapes on a page. This narrative didn’t precede making the piece; I started working with the color and the story revealed itself to me as I worked. Then, I decided I wanted to draw. When I was a college student, a teacher informed me I might never be able to learn to draw; so, I decided to learn now! I began with drawing a grapefruit, then pear, plum and bottle. After success with these, I looked to Leonardo Da Vinci for inspiration and technique.
