“First Day of School”
“First Day of School” is a narrative painting whose story unfolded during the creation process. For me, meaning and narrative may be arrived at through color and the position of shapes on a page. This narrative didn’t precede making the piece; I started working with the color and the story revealed itself to me as I worked. I started with the rubbings of the large leaf and the small leaf of the same color. The connection between them became apparent to me because of the color. Then, I added the small green leaves as elements to come between the large and small leaf. The small leaves all look connected because of their shape and movement but one is separated by color and has a purposeful, lone direction.
