Gary arrived in San Francisco weeks before the 1989 earthquake, just in time to see the brick exterior peel off the office building where he was working. Having survived that, he now refuses to leave the City, no matter the inducements of his native subtropical South.
With retirement came the first opportunity to try painting, now competing with writing and classical music for his attention. Three years under Hugh Leeman's gentle encouragement has persuaded him that acrylic paints are not a mysterious trap, and he will soon finish his 100th painting.
If Van Gogh could create 900 paintings in 10 years, Gary hopes to at least finish his second 100 during the next decade.
