Concepcion Ruiz - Muy Elegante - Mission Neighborhood Centers

Description

“My name is Concepción Ruiz, I was born in Mexico. I have been living here in the United States for many years. A friend invited me to go to the Mission Neighborhood Centers about four years ago or more. Before I went to another center, they are all very nice, but when I started coming to this one I decided to stay here because I met many very friendly people and the staff who works here at the center always look for programs and services for our benefits. Now that we cannot leave because of COVID-19, we take classes virtually, especially the art class. That class has help me a lot, since I starting participating on it, I am able to cope with everything is going on and relieve my stress. Thanks Aurora, Joana, Claudia and Maria. Thank you very much for thinking of us older adults.” Concepcion was born and raised in Guanajuato, Mexico. Now, after working 35 years in San Francisco's Hotel California, she's happy spending time with her two daughters. They cook together--especially Concepcion's favorite dishes, enchiladas and chilaquiles (a traditional Mexican breakfast)--and enjoys going to the movies. She's also very proud of her two college-educated granddaughters. She had never done art before coming to AWE classes and her teacher Santiago reports that she has advanced a lot in her artwork. She is grateful to have learned about composition, background and foreground, color theory and mixing color. Concepcion works primarily in pencil and watercolor. The words of wisdom of this elder artist with a wonderful smile and positive energy: "It's important to stay active as you get old." And that, she says, is why her art class is so important to her.
