Peggy Garlinghouse (Peggy Pettus, her professional/maiden name) was born and raised in San Francisco. She attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart, earned a BA in Art History from the University of California, Berkeley, completed a teaching credential at Lone Mountain, and later took selected painting classes at the San Francisco Academy of Art. She married Richard Garlinghouse in 1972, moved into a Victorian in San Francisco, and raised three daughters and several cats, now spoiling two grandsons. After retiring and spending time in Napa County, she moved back to San Francisco and into Ivy Park in October 2024, where she began attending three or four art classes a week.
Peggy has had a pencil or brush in her hand since she was a little girl. When she works, she goes into her own world and likes it there. She has always believed that “group art” enhances success because it allows for cross creativity. Over the years, she has painted in loose groupings, with good friends, informally and formally, sharing studios, models, materials, techniques, and conversation.
She reflects that “getting older can attract loneliness and cause isolation, but doing art with friends keeps life moving.”
