Born the daughter of a movie director in Seoul, Korea, Diana Yoon worked as a fashion designer for years before starting her recent body of work. To anyone who knows her and has seen her painting, it is obvious that those two passions go hand in hand; for her first art classes with AWE Yoon would come to class in high heels, impeccably dressed.
It wasn't long before Marchell (the service coordinator at Jones) gifted her and other lady artists smocks to protect her stylish wardrobe.
With a lot of painting experience behind her, Diana has developed a distinct visual language: loose and textural brushstrokes are elegantly and judiciously layered around and over forms to create a sense of depth. The natural world- flowers, vegetation, trees, animals- and motherhood-mother and baby- are two themes that are central to her work and overlap each other-mother and baby squirrels, mother and baby bird. Diana's work is grounding and comforting, anchoring viewers to things that are real and important.
As revealed to her teacher and everyone at Jones, she plans on completing the greater part of her life's work before her 90th birthday.
