Lilia Cardenas is from Mexico. After moving to Portland, Oregon, she met her husband, a Guatemalan goalie for a local soccer team. Together, they raised their family in San Francisco.
Cardenas made her first drawing—and later paintings—in Hugh Leeman’s art classes at Mission Neighborhood Centers, Inc. Over the past two years, she has taught herself to draw and paint with her non-dominant hand. Her deep connection to her family inspires this artwork.
Beyond Bingo and the occasional trip to the casino, making art has become a deep source of inspiration. She has made artworks of her daughter and a painting inspired by the memories of meeting her husband in Portland after a soccer game.
