Born in the Lower East Side of NYC, her family moved to Roosevelt, New Jersey- contributing to the massive WWII industry- her father built airplanes, and mother knitted clothing for soldiers. In 1945, they moved to a large family home in Los Angeles, owned by her Grandparents where Yiddish was spoken. Encouraged each day by her father, ( an avid reader since he had quit school to support his family), Louise was reading constantly by the time she was 4 years old. The family moved to Berkeley, and Louise left high school early when she was offered a full scholarship by the University of Chicago in Classical Literature. There, she met and married her husband and had their first of three children on graduation day! They were invited to Kenya as teachers and stayed 2 years. After returning to Berkeley to raise her children, she sat on the School Board. She received a PHD in Public Policy and Finance, and was tapped by President Clinton to work in Washington DC as Assistant Secretary of Public Transportation, serving for seven years.
“My father often took us on trips, and this painting was inspired by one journey from Los Angeles to the area near Joshua Tree. As we crossed the desert and began climbing into the hills, we noticed a group of people emerging from the mountains, heading toward the city to start a new life. The sky was overcast, and a light rain had just begun to fall.”
