Ruth's Table - Sharanjit Sandu - Homage to BasquiatDescription
I was born in Yuba City, CA, and raised in Hayward. I studied Exercise Physiology and Art History at UC Davis. I have lived in San Francisco since 1994. After working in the exercise and fitness field, I discovered yoga and completed my teacher training at Piedmont Yoga Studio in 1997–1998. I went on to teach yoga full-time, continuing my studies in India, where I also explored Indian classical dance (Odissi) and the martial art Kalarippayattu.
In early 2025, I joined classes at Ruth’s Table, attending creative reuse classes and participating in the AWE class. This experience introduced me to a vibrant creative community and renewed my sense of artistic curiosity. I have been focusing on drawing and painting portraits, inspired in part by my mother, who studied fine arts at Agra University in India in the early 60s. During one class, I experimented with a more intuitive and expressive approach, creating a painting inspired by Jean-Michel Basquiat’s skull imagery. Completed in a single two-hour session, the work emphasizes bold color, movement, and spontaneity.
My current goal is to maintain a daily drawing and painting practice while continuing to explore portraiture and expressive techniques. I often leave classes saying, "Ruth's Table is my happy place."
