Orlando based artist Anthony Mancuso was awarded a Studio Residency At A&H in 2019 – 19 and again in 2022 – 23. He stated about his work, “My work examines the spatial and psychological dynamics of domestic life, emphasizing the overlooked routines and rituals that shape our shared environments. Through painting, I engage in a meditative exploration of intimacy, materiality, and the quiet negotiations embedded in everyday experience”. In, Thoughts on Liminal Space, artist and writer Sinuhe Vega comments on Mancuso’s practice, “Anthony paints and engages with the everyday, a painter of daily objects emphasizing the overlooked nature of routines, habits, and rituals…he looks for that still and the silent moment reminding us that there's poetry in the mundane. I was drawn to the small paintings, they were close-ups, focused on singular items. The way he captures these items, isolating them within a vibrant monochromatic palette, reflects a deeper philosophical stance on perception and presence. In contemplating his paintings, it becomes clear that the color used becomes the protagonist undermining the image, this disarms the viewer and allows them to enter…He stares and stares at the object, stripping it of its associations until it disintegrates, like repeating a word over and over until it becomes just a sound, void of meaning”.
