After William Waterhouse was captured by the Confederate Calvary in 1864, he was held as a prisoner of war for eleven months, including in Georgia's infamous Civil War prison, Andersonville. Waterhouse survived the atrocities of Andersonville, but was left with severe weight-loss and ailments that continued for the rest of his life. After the war, the prison was restored to a historic site. Made as souvenirs, these pamphlets provided information to those who visited the site in remembrance of "where the heroes of the war suffered and died."
