As a Filipino American visual artist who makes drawings referring to land, landscapes and the relationships we have with the land, my residency at Art & History Museums of Maitland was most memorable. It gave me the gift of time and space to think about André Smith's legacy and think about how artists can be just like him in cultivating communities to support each other, to have a place to experiment and take risks, and in turn inspire others about art’s potential.
For this exhibition, this drawing that I included is titled "Halo." While it means a "circle of light" in the English language, in Tagalog - which is the native language in the Philippines, it means "mixture." Ever since my residency in 2019, I've been inspired to experiment with other media where my large drawings serve as an anchor. With this drawing "Halo," I'm simultaneously working on related videos, photographic series and sound recordings, all referring to bodies of water and the genesis of water on Earth.
