Winter Park Telephone provided early telephone services using magneto technology, which utilizes an electrical device that generates current by moving a coil past a magnet. Customers turned a hand crank to generate the electricity to ring the bell. Two large dry-cell batteries inside the telephone provided the three volts of direct current to power the talk circuit.
This particular switchboard was originally located in the living room of Mrs. Mary Culp, who served as the operator in Orange County for many years.
