While beautiful, the popularity of feathered hats such as this one nearly caused the extinction of many Florida birds, Before the Florida Audubon Society was founded in Maitland in 1900. no laws for the protection of wild birds had been created in Florida. The Florida Audubon Society was the second such society in the United States, and was instrumental in the education and the protection of Florida's birds.
