In "Palaces and Barges," J. André Smith captures the Venetian waterfront with a light, quick, line. Large sailing barges with tall masts and fine rigging sit at the center of the scene, moored before a row of Gothic palaces lined with arcades and pointed windows. A bell tower with a tall spire rises at left, and domes and rooftops stretch along the far shore. In the foreground, figures stand in a small boat at the waters edge. Smith leaves much of the sky and water as bare paper, so the scene feels airy and spontaneous, much like a sketch made on the spot. The print reflects the long tradition of artists drawn to Venice, and offers a quieter, more traditional side of Smith's work that his later Cubist-influenced prints.
