This American flag, displayed with thirty-eight stars, dates from 1885 when Maitland was first incorporated. The initials stitched on the seam stands for William Henry Waterhouse, a local builder who served as one of Maitland's aldermen for thirty years. Waterhouse personally traveled to Tallahassee to retrieve this flag for the town's first parade. Afterwards, the flag was moved to the town hall where it was kept until 1889 when four more states joined the Union. The flag was then returned to Mr. Waterhouse and kept in the family's private collection.
