Description

"An abstract design done in the round rather than a one-surface or two-surface arrangement. The original was made from cardboard that was later colored. As a permanent medium, work of this sort could be done in metal of various kinds and textures, tooled, hammered, or it could be done with the use of strips of copper or brass that has been painted, or left in its natural color and placed in contrast with the painted metal. AS - 1938"

Context

In 1938, artist J. André Smith exhibited a series of bold experiments at the Research Studio—24 “eye-openers” that challenged what he called the “well-behaved and disgustingly normal” state of art. These images revisit that moment of creative risk and reinvention. While the original constructions were temporary, Smith and Attilio “Duke” Banca documented each work, preserving what Smith described as their “first season of experimental work.”
