Description

Ten clothing buttons featuring a left facing profile image of Henry Clay surrounded by the name Henry Clay. Underneath the bust is the date 1845. The buttons have a raised rim with a leaf design embossed on it. The reverse has a stem with threads through it. The maker's name surrounds the stem. The buttons are gilt, and the gilding is worn in some places. The buttons are mounted on a square of black foam board. A t the upper left of the board is a picture of a flag with a ribbon bearing Henry Clay's name and the name Theodore Frelinghuysen is written on the bottom stripe of the flag. This image is reproduced from the Poughkeepsie Eagle 6/1/1844. On the lower right is a photo of a painting of William Henry Harrison misidentified as Henry Clay. At the upper right is a photo of a painting of Isaac Platt. At the lower right is a text panel about Platt, the original owner of the buttons.
