Description

Medium format color film photography, inkjet printed on ARCHES® Aquarelle Rag paper. This photograph captures the studio of artists Barbara Landes and Paul Sullivan at 111 First Street, Jersey City, NJ. This piece is one of the work from Fausty's series "A Fragile Utopia," where the artist photographed the final years of 111 First Street, Jersey City, NJ from 2001 to 2005. Formerly the warehouse of the Lorillard Tobacco Company, 111 First Street had become an arts center in the 1980s, housing galleries, studios, residences, and lofts that housed over 200 artists. In 2005, the artists and other tenants were evicted in a dispute with developer Lloyd Goldman, and the building was demolished in 2007. According to Fausty, "This saga is, of course, not unique to our building; battles like this occur in many communities between speculative absentee landowners/ developers and the local citizens impacted by their projects. As a close observer of this scene, it is not my intention to indict. Rather, I would like more people to begin to think about these inevitable tensions and to find fair and productive ways of resolving them."
