Drying sennegrassDescription
A Sámi woman gathers and hangs sennegrass to dry, preserving an ancestral technique for surviving the extreme cold of the Arctic winter. Once dried, the grass was placed inside traditional finnesko footwear, where it provided exceptional insulation, moisture management, and cushioning. Combined with properly made reindeer-hide footwear, this simple natural material helped make prolonged winter travel, and skiing in temperatures of −40°C, possible. The practice illustrates the depth of Sámi ecological knowledge: highly effective cold-weather solutions developed from local materials and refined over generations.Create Date
