Duret wooden ski 1940s with Salomon Skade toe pieces
Entry/Object ID
WVS0003
Description
Duret "Contreplaqué" literally meaning layered and attached. This French made ski is a very early example of laminated skis, and it is done so crudely that, in this collection, it still gets the item number prefix WVS for wooden vintage skis rather than the MMS that denotes modern materials skis. It is debatable which of those two categories this ski should fall under.
The bindings are the first Salomon release toe pieces, the "Skade". The heel binding is branded RB Extens III and is a cable binding that releases thanks to the spring under the lever.
Duret was a manufacturer of skis established in the early 1920s at Habère-Lullin (between Avoriaz ski resort and Geneva) in Haute-Savoie, France. Although it was a successful enterprise that survived a century, it closed its doors in 2022 having failed to hit the critical mass required of modern ski brands.
