Rosemount Ski BootEntry/Object ID
SSB0002Description
This Rosemount ski boot was made using fiberglass-reinforced epoxy in the 1960s. Rosemount Engineering was developing aviation technology and was headed by an avid skier, Frank Werner. These were the early days of metal and fiberglass skis, which were significantly more rigid than the typical wooden ski. Leather boots were supple and could get more so as the ski day wore on and they became wet. For most skiers, this made it quite challenging to control heavy and stiff skis. Werner thought that synthetic boots were the answer as they could offer more sideways rigidity than leather boots. A lot of creativity went into this product, including being the first side-entry boot.
It had a solid decade-long run, but never fully resolved the main issue with this boot: it was never fully waterproof, resulting in cold, wet feet - nobody's favorite... This enabled Lange to become dominant while Rosemount was eventually withdrawn from the market after a decade of efforts and gradual improvements.Category
