Early release toe binding—Ski Free. It was invented by Norwegian Hjalmar Hvam, a top competitor of his day. After breaking his leg at a race, he, while recovering at the hospital, devised the mechanics of a release toe piece. The foundation of his solution is still the one used in today's latest bindings.
