Splitkein Bass laminated skisEntry/Object ID
MMS0003Description
Splitkein, the Norwegian inventor of laminated skis, is here in some marketing alliance with Bass, which was an important player in the US market in the first half of the 20th century.
This is a pine ski with a hickory base and lingnostone (engineered, very hard wood) edges.
One of the main advantages of going through the trouble of manufacturing laminated skis is that they keep their shape better and longer. To that effect, note the surprising amount of camber left in these skis that haven't been used for several years.Material

Historical NoteNote
Splitkein(literally split cane) was a Norwegian company that took out one of the first patents on laminated skis in 1932. For millennia, ever since the Stone Age, skis had been made from a single piece of wood, but when, in the 1930’s, chemistry progressed sufficiently to produce a strong enough glue, the ski manufacturers were able to glue strips of wood together and produce a laminated ski which was much stronger, more versatile, kept shape (and especially camber) significantly better and so made for more responsive skis. Splitkein brought laminated skis to near perfection by the 1950’s/60’s and we have a fabulous example here in the collection. Sadly, the perfection was short-lived as glass fiber skis were starting to appear on the market, and by the 1970’s both wooden skis and Splitkein were history. SCSCreate Date
