Tape Loom and Leather Work

Name/Title

Tape Loom and Leather Work

Entry/Object ID

SCP0010

Description

Masters of tape loom weaving and leatherwork, the Sámi honed skills that fueled a lively trade, whether with neighboring Sámi siida (villages) or the farming communities of Fennoscandia and beyond. The tape loom was used to make woolen ribbons that would be bound from the boot upward in tight spirals, sealing out snow during long winter journeys. Practical yet distinctive, these boot ribbons were the precursor to the modern gaiter.
