Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum
Wausau, WI
Coronavirus considerations required rethinking on-site, hands-on art-making experiences and led to developing, assembling, and sharing Art Kits for at-home art making. Take-and-make Art Kits, available for pickup at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum and online via printable PDFs, offer ways to encourage creativity and at-home art making while strengthening connections between the Museum and the community.
During the spring 2020 quarantine, Museum educator Catie Anderson took inventory of available art materials in the Museum’s education storage, counting supplies and developing project ideas for summer Art Kits delivered to the Wausau School District for distribution to students enrolled in online summer school. Museum staff also developed for Museum visitors Art Kits with themes from the summer exhibition’s artwork of India and the fall "Birds in Art" exhibition.
Art Kits are available for curbside pickup anytime from the Museum’s Stop-by Studio, a birdhouse-inspired structure installed in early November on the Museum’s campus, where Art Kits and books are free for all to keep or share. Each Art Kit encourages participants to share images of their creations on social media and include #WoodsonArtMuseum.
