Glessner House, Chicago, IL
A major consideration during closure was remaining connected with the surrounding neighborhood, which would otherwise simply see a shuttered house. We are fortunate to have a beautiful large private courtyard, which in the past, has only been accessible to people attending tours or programs. As soon as the weather turned favorable in April, we opened the courtyard to the neighborhood seven days a week from 9:00am to 5:00pm, with signage encouraging people to come in for a look.
We created signs for the windows, easily accessed while in the courtyard, allowing people to peek in five different rooms with a QR code on each sign. By clicking on the code this took the guest to written information on the room and a link to a 360-degree photo. Approximately 100 people each day come into the courtyard and many people – dog walkers, joggers, parents with young children – have indicated they make it a part of their daily routine to stop in.
