Built by the UK-based Tangerine Computer Systems from 1984-1985 as a cheaper competitor to microcomputers like the Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum, the Atmos never sold as well as those devices but did attract a strong following in Europe, especially France. While the Atmos can display 8 colours on screen at once, the screen is divided into small tiles that can only use 2 colours each. This gives Oric games a distinctive “8-bit” appearance similar to the Spectrum and NES.
