* -NAMES IN THE NEWS Squadron Leader Edwin Burns has joined the Ottawa branch office of MacDonald Bros. Aircraft Limited as assistant to the branch manager. S / L Burns recently retired from active duty with the RCAF after 27 years con tinuous service. Born in Boulder City, Colorado, but raised and educated in Ottawa, S/L Burns joined the RCAF in 1927 as a supply technician. He served in that branch continuously, gaining promotion from aircrafLman to squadron leader. Before joining the Air Force he served for three years in the Canadian Army, also in the supply trade. During World War II S/L Burns was active in setting up new supply depots across Canada. He also played a vital role in the move ment of No. 2 Equipment Depot from Calgary to Vancouver in early 1943, a shift designed to provide logistics sup port for the coastal units on the west coast. Dr. S. G. Hooker has been named a director of The Bristol Aeroplane Co. of Canada Limited, it has been an nounced by the firm's head office in Montreal. Dr. Hooker is also a director of The Bristol Aeroplane Co. Limited, England, and chief engineer of its Engine Division. His appointment to the directorate of the Canadian sub sidiary is a result of increasing Cana dian interest in Bristol engines, accord ing to Bristol of Canada. Tom Kennett has been appointed to the export department of Cessna Air craft Company, Wichita, Kansas, it has been announced by Gene Charlton, export manager. Charles U. Forbell, veteran bush pilot of St. Jovite, P.Q., has been appointed chief pilot and assistant chief engineer of Wheeler Airlines. Mr. Forbell, apart from his wartime service with the RCAF, has been with Wheeler since 1939. He also obtained his private pilot license at that time, and the fol lowing year qualified as an air engineer. He joined the RCAF in 1940 and became assistant chief engineer at the EFTS at Windsor Mills, P.Q. In 1941 he was posted to No. 8 AOS, Ancienne Lorette, P.Q. as staff pilot. He sub sequently became chief instructor on twin engine aircraft. Mr. Forbell re turned to Wheeler in 1945 and has /anuary, 1954 been engaged in flying to many parts of northern Canada ever since. He now has approximately 10,000 flying hours, as well as considerable engineering ex perience. In relinquishing flying duties to some extent he will supervise and train pilots, and assist Bert Gregson, chief engineer, in the enlarged main tenance set-up. V. R. Knudsen, sales & service man ager for Standard Aero Engine Limited of Winnipeg, was elected a director of the Aviation Distributors & Manufac turers Association at that organization's eleventh annual meeting, held recently at St. Louis, Missouri. Mr. Knudsen's term expires in 1956. V. R. KNUDSEN The sudden death occurred in Van couver on November 17 of Gordon D. ~cramstad, assistant superintendent of Sales & Traffic ( Overseas Lines) for CPA. Born and raised in Camrose, Alberta, J\fr. Scramstad entered the aviation business in 1940 as traffic clerk with Canadian Airways Limited at Edmon ton. In the next few years he held posts as agent station manager throughout the Northwest Territories and the Yukon with Canadian Airways and, after the merger in 1942, with CPA. In March, 1950, he was appointed manager for CPA at Hong Kong, and remained in the Orient until Nov ember, 1925. On his return to Canada he was airport agent for the air line for a few months until his promotion to the post he held at his death. Vic Crompton has been named assis tant to the manager, Sales & Service Department, Gas Turbine Div., A. V. Roe Canada Limited, Mr. Crompton, who was closely associated with Sir Frank Whittle clur;ng the initial de velopment of the turbojet engine, has been with A vro Canada since January of last year. Prior to his present appoint ment, he was special assignments engineer for the Gas Turbine Division. A. G. McLarty has been named dis trict traffic & sales manager for TCA at both Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury. Mr. McLarty joined the air line in 1946 and opened the Sault Ste. Marie office a year later. A. F. McLachlin, president and a director of Railway & Power Engineer ing Corporation Limited, has been appointed to the directorate of Canada Iron Foundries Limited.
