Description

Born in 1889 in Virgina and moved to Canada in 1913, Walter was an aviation pioneer who received his pilots license in 1912 which was signed by Orville Wright - in 1927, he drove Charles Lindberg around Ottawa. Joined Fleet Aircraft in 1930 and left in 1945 as their VP & GM. Joined Avro Canada in 1945 as their VP and General Manager and member of their board. (NOTE: Jim Floyd listed Walter as President in "The Avro Story" - object 3008 / Canadian Aviation 50th Anniversary Issue in 1978 though this should have been Sir Roy Dobson) Walter gave the speech for the Jetliner's Official Flight in 1949. He was included in an Avro News photo of the Stamp Club in 1950. Was a speaker at the 1950 design office dinner. Received his 5 year service award in 1951 prior to resigning from his role as VP & GM in 1951 due to health but stayed on the board until 1954. Lived in Occupation on a voter's list (found via Ancestry.ca) in York, Ontario stated as an A. V. Roe employee. Died in 1956 at age 65.
