On 28 March 1944, 401 Sqn. Spitfire YO-Y (possibly LF.XI MH848) crashed after taking off on a low level sweep when it's drop tank failed to feed, P/O F. Hubbard injured and "just" became a Guinea Pig with burns to his legs. P/O F. Hubbard married one of the nurses at East Grinstead, and later earned a degree in aeronautical engineering and worked on the design of the Iroquois engines for the Avro Arrow (R. Donovan).
