Camping on Balboa Island, 1911

Name/Title

Camping on Balboa Island, 1911

Entry/Object ID

BIM2019.031.15

Description

A photograph of two young men seated on either side of a crate shelling clams or other shellfish into a small basin. The basin is sitting on a crate that previously held baking powder. These kinds of shell bakes were common on the island in the early days as seafood was a plentiful resource in the area. Campers often set up makeshift set-ups just like this for shucking sand crabs, clams, and other creatures collected along the shore.
