Balboa Bay
In the late 1800s Newprot was the largst shipping center above San Diego after James McFadden and his brother Robert embarked on a general shipping business with their boat "Newport". The Newport Wharf and Lumber Co. built the Santa Ana and newprot Railroad, the grade may be seen where it went through present Costa Mesa. It was not until 1919 that the ferry system started with a small row-boat, holding 6 people, and powered by an outboard motor. At low tide it was easy to walk most of the way across the sand banks. The present island had a couple of homes built on the sand spits. Today the island is built up and the ferry system has grown to boats that hold three cars and 150 people. Balboa is a town with gift shops, markets, drug stores and is located between the bay and the ocean.... M.P.
