2016.83.06Description
The front image is of the ferry departing from its dock on the peninusla and headed across to the island. The cars suggest the image is from the 50s or 60s. Its a color image and also shows many small sailing and row boats.
The back reads: Balboa and Balboa island, Claifornia. These ever populat vacation and week-end recreational areas face one another across the sail-dotted lagoon-like bay, on the shores of which are clustered many fine homes and pelasure crafts. This bay was once popular with Yankee smugglers, and was an important commercial port from 1872 to 1898. The Santa Ana River carried great quantities of silt into the bay by 1915 and it finally had to be dredged to a depth of 10 feet, at low tide. The spectatular Tournament of Lights, Flight of the Snowbirds, and the Pacific coast Yacht Regatta are annual events on the bay. Ferry boats operate between Balboa and Balboa Island on an almost continuous schedule.
