Description

A phtograh Of part of Newport bay from a pier in an unknown location. There are a series of snowbirds on the right. Back reads: Newport Beach Newport Bay This land-locked bay is one of the oldest harbors along the Pacific Coast. The bay was formed as an outlet for the Santa Ana River, but the stream carried in so much silt that by 1915 the river outlet was diverted into a channel direct to the sea. Today pleasure boats sail over the lagoon-like bay that was once the home of Yankee-smugglers, men who traded along the California coast against the law of Spain. This was a time that the skin of a sea otter was called a California Bank Note. The bay fell behind San Pedro as a commercial port in 1898. Today the bay is known as the sport and pleasure boat spot of the west...M.P.
