2004.019.004Description
Metal hinge and attached fragment of wood from a folding ruler. This particular type of ruler is usually hinged in 6" section, and used to measure the inside of window and door frames. The column-shaped metal hinge has two arms coming off each side, each having two metal posts perpendicular to the arm to anchor the wooden ruler. A fragment of the wood is still attached to one side. The wood is lacquered and has small black lines on both sides. One side is marked in 1/16" increments, the other in 1 centimeter increments.
Jeff Johns found this artifact on the foundation ledge to the left of the coal chute (on the east wall) in the basement at 607 Grove Street. The basement was dug out in the 1920s, around the same time that other remodeling projects were occurring in the house.
