Description

One hairpin from a matching pair found in the parlor of 607 Grove Street during an archaeological excavation. The hairpin is most likely made from celluloid. The celluloid was made to resemble tortoise shell. The top of the hairpin is formed into a three-quarter circle. The pin curves in and out twice below the circle top and ends in sharp points. The whole hairpin is shaped into a convex curve. The celluloid is flexible and semi-translucent. Judging from where it was found in the parlor, along the east wall, it could have fallen under the floor at multiple points in time. It could have fallen during the house's construction in 1864, sometime before the floor was replaced after the fire. It also could have fallen during the time that the floor was replaced when the baseboards were removed and a gap was present between the floorboards and the wall.
