"In the following pages, I tell the story of a first-generation Basque kid from a small town, in a sparsely-populated state, who through circumstance and good fortune was privileged to be a participant in many important state, national and international events of the last 30 years, including major events in the 1980s, perhaps one of the most significant periods in out history."
"Laxalt was the three-time National Chairmean of Ronald Reagan's Presidential campaigns, and he nominated Reagan at the national conventions in 1976, 1980, and 1984. President Reagan appointed him to the position of General Chairman of the National Republican Party in 1983, a position he helt until 1987. By virtue of his friendship with Ronald Reagan, which originally developed while they served as governors of neighboring states in the 1960s, Senator Laxalt served as the President's "eyes and ears" on Capitol Hill and was often referred to as "The First Friend."
