Fragment of curved glass found under the dining room at 607 Grove Street. The glass is very thin and has a Greek key pattern etched around the top edge. The glass is clear and has iridescent flakes on the inside and outside of the cup. The iridescent quality is a result of this artifact being buried in soil for a long period of time. The soil corrodes the glass and makes minerals leech out, causing the iridescent flakes and color. This piece of glass fits onto another artifact, a wine glass, found in the same area (2004.038.016).
Looking at pictures ca. 1870, it is known that the Jacobs family had a cookhouse where the dining room now stands. This artifact could have come to rest under the dining room in a variety of ways. One theory is that, before the addition to the house, broken glassware, plates, and other items could have been thrown into a trash heap just outside of the cookhouse.
