The French Croix de Guerre medal was awarded to French and allied soldiers for valorous service during WWI. Small scale Croix de Guerre medals worn for evening and less formal events.Context
These medals were awarded to Albert C. Painsipp. Painsipp was born in Austria, but came to Batavia when he was young. After attending Batavia schools he worked for the Challenge Co. and in the offices of the C & N W railroad before volunteering for service with the 33rd “Prairie” Division in July, 1917.
After only two days of training with tanks and artillery, the Prairie Division entered the trenches of France prepared to surprise German forces at Hamel. Under heavy fire, Allied forces swept up Hamel on July 4th, 1918. Albert Painsipp single handedly cleared a German machine gun nest with hand grenades, preventing heavy flanking casualties.
For his bravery, he was awarded the French Croix deGuerre, the British Victoria Medal and the American Distinguished Service Cross.Collection
