After his return from Vietnam, Ramsey served as a patrol officer for the Batavia Police Department from 1971-74. He transitioned to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office in 1974 and went on to be elected as Sheriff in 1994, serving three consecutive terms, the longest serving sheriff in Kane County history. Ramsey served as a Batavia Alderman for eight years, Commander of VFW Post 1197, and in 1984 helped plan and finance Batavia's Vietnam Veterans Monument. At the time of its construction, it was one of less than a dozen such monuments in the nation. Ramsey passed away in 2023.
