military uniform of the US Army during WWIContext
This uniform was worn by Dewey Swan during his service with the Motor Transport Corp of the US Army in WWI. Dewey Swan was working as a bench hand at the US Wind Engine & Pump Co. when he enlisted. He served with the newly formed Motor Transport Corps. Motor vehicles were a novel technology for the American military in WWI and mechanics were in high demand. The Corps managed the Army’s fleet of trucks to transport supplies and personnel.
The corps adopted the winged helmet of Mercury, the Roman god of speed and travel, as their symbol. It can be seen on the collar of Swan’s uniform and on the right sleeve.Collection
