Scope and Content

Addressed to Paul Garlanger. Envelope sent from USS New York on the morning of May 12, 1937, when the ship was in Portsmouth, England. Features a "USS New York" stamp of the US seal, a bust within a circle, and a caption "Representing U.S. Navy at George VI Coronation"

Context

USS New York (BB-34) was the sister ship of USS Texas, and the lead ship of the New York-class battleships. She was commissioned from May 15, 1914, to August 29, 1946. In May of 1937, USS New York carried Admiral Rodman, the POTUS's personal representative for the coronation of King George VI of the United Kingdom.
