Scope and Content

Envelope sent from USS Texas on the morning of May 9, 1946. Features a stamp of an honorable discharge "ruptured duck" patch, labeled in blue ink with stars surrounding it.

Context

Battleship Texas sailed to the east coast in January 1946, began preparation for deactivation and donation to the State of Texas on February 13, and was in the U.S. Reserve Fleet from June 18, 1946, to April 21, 1948. She was decommissioned at San Jacinto State Park. Battleship Texas had her own post office. All mail passed through a censor before leaving the ship. Once the package is checked, it was stamped with a “U.S.S. TEXAS” stamp. If in a port, mail could carry the markers of the post office on shore. The Honorable Discharge patch, or “Ruptured Duck” was worn above the right breast pocket on WWII servicemen and women uniforms and allowed them to continue wearing their uniforms after discharge.
