USS Alton, the former protected cruiser USS Chicago (CA-14), moored in Pearl Harbor. Harbor tug pulled beside port bow. Cruiser Alton has crew quarters on aft half of the ship.Context
Battleship Texas steamed, berthed, and operated alongside hundreds of ships from the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, and other fleets across the globe throughout her time in commission from 1914 to 1948.
Clarence C. Clifton enlisted on August 2, 1926, and joined the crew of Battleship Texas on October 12, 1926, as a S2c. He was promoted to S1c in the summer of 1927 and remained stationed on Texas through 1930.
Many crew members kept photo albums that each have hundreds of photos chronicling their service onboard.
USS Alton (IX-5), formerly USS Chicago (CA/CL-14), was commissioned from April 17, 1889, to September 30, 1923. She was renamed, and redesignated on June 16, 1928, and sold on May 15, 1936.Collection
