Context

William Hynes was a veteran of World War I, who later joined the crew of Battleship Texas from December 31, 1922, to July 24, 1925. He joined the crew as a WT1c and left as a MM1c. Dog tags are used in the military for identification purposes. The US Navy mandated all sailors wear them shortly after entering into WWI.
