Description

Smoking shore image taken from USS Capps (DD-550). Small brown splotch on center above shoreline. DD-550 screened Texas and other battleships out of frame during later days of Battle of Iwo Jima.

Context

Battleship Texas began preparations for Operation “Detachment,” the invasion of Iwo Jima, on January 23, 1945. She departed the Ulithi Islands on February 10, and supported the landings from February 16 to March 7, and returned to the Ulithi Islands on March 10, 1945. USS Capps (DD-550) was a Fletcher-class destroyer commissioned from June 23, 1943, to January 15, 1947. She was sold to the Spanish Navy and transferred on May 15, 1957.
