Scope and Content

Envelope sent from USS New York on the morning of April 15, 1934. Features a large "United States Battle Fleet" stamp, wrapped in rope, with a stylized outline of New York, and a small caption citing her construction "Built in 2 years, 7 months time at a total cost of $11,365,808"

Context

USS New York (BB-34) was the sister ship of USS Texas, and the lead ship of the New York-class battleships. She was commissioned from May 15, 1914, to August 29, 1946. She participated in the nuclear testing at Bikini Atoll on June 1, 1946, and was sunk as a target ship on June 6, 1946.
