Description

From a donated collection of individual photographs and pages out of a Texas crewmember's photo album. Items donated by the Los Angeles Maritime Museum. Features a hospital ship next to a Colorado-class battleship.

Context

Battleship Texas was flagship of the United States Fleet from September 1, 1927, to September 15, 1931. Admirals Wiley, Pratt, and Chase served as Commander-in-Chief, United States Fleet in that time. Clarence C. Clifton enlisted on August 2, 1926, and joined the crew of Battleship Texas on October 12, 1926, as a S2c. He was promoted to S1c in the summer of 1927 and remained stationed on Texas through 1930. Many crew members kept photo albums that each have hundreds of photos chronicling their service onboard. USS Colorado (BB-45) was the lead ship of her class of battleship, and commissioned from August 30, 1923, to January 7, 1947. She was sold for scrap on July 23, 1959. USS Maryland (BB-46) was a Colorado-class battleship commissioned from July 21, 1921, to April 3, 1947. She was sold for scrap on July 8, 1959. USS West Virginia (BB-47) was a Colorado-class battleship commissioned from December 1, 1923, to January 9, 1947. She was sold for scrap on August 24, 1959.
